What is an IP and DNS and what do they mean

IP stands for Internet Protocol.

DNS stands for Domain Name Server.

The DNS system allows people to use names (e.g., www.impressm.com) rather than IP addresses (such as 209.123.203.235) to find Web sites and send e-mail. When you type www.impressm.com into a Web browser, for example, a behind-the-scenes process quickly translates the name into an IP address which is passed to the Web browser so that it can connect to the intended server.
